The 2nd annual Funk Parade shut down U Street Saturday, and a huge turnout of locals and visitors took over the surrounding area. A variety of marchers included students, marching bands, community organizations, percussionists, skateboarders, lion dancers, and even D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) paraded down the lined street. She was throwing out green beaded necklaces and taking photos with spectators from the packed crowd.
This was the first time U Street was closed to traffic for the event, presented by the D.C. Department of Funk. Performances happened all over the neighborhood. It was a spectacle for everyone, and should be back next year, keeping the funk alive.
