Minnesota is visiting 15 cities all over the U.S. on his fall tour that kicked off in mid-October. Last Thursday, his Washington show, right in the middle of his schedule, was at D.C.’s most subterranean venue, U Street Music Hall.
The demand for the show got a little crazy, as it was a lesson in nightlife economics. Tickets sold out day of, bringing a lot of people to the venue early trying their best to score any way in. Tickets were going for double or even triple face value, but the demand for Minnesota and Space Jesus was setting their worth.
Around 11:35 p.m., Space Jesus came on the DJ stage side of U Hall and thanked Bortz for the opening set. Rocking what looked like a Raiders jersey covered by his flowing locks of hair, he opened with his track “Jafar – Arabian Nights,” part of the B(. Y .)TLEGS released on Bandcamp earlier this year.
Playing tracks like the Yheti Remix of his song “Slomosapian” and a new G Jones single, Space Jesus kept the packed house of U Hall entertained. And he gave regular shout outs and thank yous to Minnesota before handing things over to the highly anticipated headliner at 12:30 a.m.
Minnesota delivered exactly what you would want to hear from him, a set that is banging dubstep with a super loud sound. Despite the style, U Hall didn’t seem as loud as it could have been, but maybe we are starting to go deaf. Headbanging is the natural reaction to the majority of Minnesota’s tunes, but it still seems like you should be doing more with your body.
Dropping all sorts of stuff from the Voyager EP like “Thunderdome” and the title track “Voyager,” Minnesota got big crowd reactions. Playing for two hours, he kept most everyone dancing at U Hall until the very end. When security turns on the lights and start kicking everyone out, and there’s still plenty of people to sweep to the exits, you know you played a great show.
