Each night in D.C., you have a long menu of events to choose from — this city is a going-out paradise every day of the week. But weekends introduce an extended spread of shows, clubs, drink specials, and need-to-be-seen scenes to satisfy your appetite for new music and brag-worthy partying.
Which brings us to our most-important recommendation: Next time you hear that Proper Vibes is organizing a show, your FOMO should kick into high gear. Feed your need for jams and bring your friends!
Last week was the second return of Proper Vibes for their D.C. series at Zeba Bar. Our appetizers were some jams from Cautious Clay as people showed up to finally begin their Friday night.
As the dance floor got more crowded, it was time for the first course: Hubbybar has a name and sound that already draws a following. He got on the mic and started rapping on the dance floor in the middle of all his fans. His energy was contagious, and the dance floor was moving!
Then, to perfectly pair with that taste of Brooklyn, Corbin Butler took over around 12:30 a.m. with Hubbybar and they rapped over a few tracks of his own. Together, they are the hip-hop collective The Scofflaw. The “We Don’t Give a F*ck About Your Function” track is a serious party song to throw down.
And like a delectable dessert that we were all salivating for, Moving Castle’s Dirty Chocolate was up — really finding his groove throughout his set. Maybe you saw him at U Street Music Hall a few weeks ago? But if you missed both opportunities, please start following Proper Vibes on Facebook so you can begin your healthy diet of future bass and plush tones. At Zeba Bar, Dirty Chocolate was vibing with the the crowd, and even included time with Cautious Clay on the sax.
Each good meal is not complete without a smooth nightcap. Taking on the role of a dessert wine or maybe a brandy (but everyone knows I’m partial to a shot of Fernet Branca with ginger ale), Lean Quatifah closed the night, again with Cautious Clay bringing saxy back. Lean Quatifah mentioned he was playing a new Keylow song as well, another Proper Vibes favorite.
To finally put a fork in this extended metaphor, if you’re hungry for a savory scene, piquant people, and a night of tasty tunes, Proper Vibes shows have your cravings covered. Bon appétit!
