Brooklyn-based Sleigh Bells supplied their heavyweight sound to a sold out crowd Tuesday night at Washington DC’s 9:30 club. In front of a black and white striped backdrop, lights flashing, vocalist Alexis Krauss turned up the crowd as Sleigh Bells took the stage just after 9:30 pm. With only four nights left on their Bitter Rivals Tour, Krauss and co-creator, Derek Miller, delivered an evening of high energy, big sounds, and bright lights.
“This is one of our favorite venues in the nation to play,” announced Krauss as the DC crowd reciprocated in kind. Sleigh Bells began the evening with “Minnie,” off of their 2013 LP Bitter Rivals. “Minnie,” was followed by “Comeback Kid,” and the recently released song, “Tiger Kit.”
One of the highlights of the night was during the band’s fourth song, “Crown of Gold,” off of their smash success 2010’s Treats. “I need all you f***ers dancing with me,” Kraus shouted as the music started and the crowd lost it, dancing as one organism to the beat as the music and strobe lights lead the way.
Sleigh Bells would go on to play for another hour to the packed crowd of hipsters, young professionals, seasoned rockers, and just plain music-loving Washingtonians. The solo set included my current favorite “Bitter Rivals,” and other tunes such as “Love Sick,” Kids,” Demons,” and “You Don’t Get Me Twice,” during which they gave a shout out to tour openers The Doldrums.
Krauss and Miller created Sleigh Bells in 2008. They are signed to M.I.A.’s label N.E.E.T. Bitter Rivals is the American noise pop group’s third album following 2012’s Reign of Terror and 2010’s Treats.
